A History of Success
In the 1970’s while working at an accounting firm, Donald Sodaro,
a Certified Public Accountant with an appreciation for operational
efficiencies, was first introduced to the concept of “limited-service”
hotels – quality lodging with reduced overhead costs that pass the
savings to the guest. With this new business model in mind, in 1972
Sodaro, and his associate William Caine Jr., founded Sixpence Inns of America for a niche guest, “the road warrior.”
For the next 18 years, they oversaw the development, construction and
operation of the highly successful national chain of hotels, which grew
to 54 locations in six states with more than 6,200 rooms operating in
excess of 85% occupancy. The success of Sixpence Inns of America
eventually caught the attention of executives at Motel 6. In 1989 Motel
6 purchased all Sixpence properties except for its flagship hotel in
Tustin, CA, in which Hanford Hotels maintains an interest.
In 1995, Sodaro and Caine reunited to found Hanford Hotels, Inc. and
began purchasing and rehabilitating underperforming hotel properties
and repositioning them with nationally recognizable brand names
including Fairfield Inns by Marriott, La Quinta, Holiday Inn and
Hilton.
Today, Hanford Hotels manages and operates highly successful hotel
properties throughout California. Each is distinguished by their
respective brands for product quality and guest satisfaction. In August
2009, Hanford Hotels announced plans to transform an Orange County,
Calif. Holiday Inn, a property that the company has owned, operated and
franchised for more than 10 years, into its first original concept and
independent hotel – The Hotel Hanford.
